What makes a good portrait?

"A portrait - a pictorial representation of a person, usually showing the face."

Thats the very least that it should be.

It should be engaging, captivating, full of character and be so much more than just a recognisable image of your physical appearance.

These days it is more important than ever that the images of yourself that you choose to use on your website, your social media platforms and in publications show your professionalism, your passion and your personality.

I look upon portrait photography as a conversation that I am having with someone, where I occasionally raise a camera to my eye.

Building a rapport is key.
Everything else is secondary.

"The eyes have it."

It's all about the eyes.

Engaging portraiture involves capturing moments and emotions.

Love, hope, fear, curiosity, anger, disappointment, happiness, sadness and surprise, all can be seen in your eyes.

Looking at a portrait should make you feel like you are gazing into the eyes of the person whilst in conversation.

"Location, location, location."

Where you are photographed can make or break a portrait.

You may want a plain, studio background or something a little more creative.

You may choose to be pictured in an environment in which you are familiar or comfortable.

Either way the background should be complimentary and not distracting.
